Sunsetca

i’ve been many places
in the past several weeks,

traveling for many reasons,
all reasons involving other people.

some folks are quick to divide people
into two groups:
those who like people
and those who don’t like people.
i continue to bump up against
that categorization,
but i no longer spend time and energy
trying to explain that i, too, like people
just in different doses.
defending and explaining is time and energy better devoted
to what my soul must have
as nourishment:
space,
silence,
solitude.

Everything I Need to Know About Life, I Learned from My Boat

Boat2

You have to pick up speed so the boat will plane,
allowing you to see where you’re going.

Boatphoebe

When you need to pass
- and you will –
always pass on the Right.

Boatwake

The faster you go, the less wake you leave.

Boat3

You have to be in gear to steer.
Neutral just won’t get you anywhere.

Boatview

Sometimes one battery is enough.
Other times you have to turn the button to the “all” position
and give it all the juice you’ve got.

from In Real Life‘s post on facebook today,
an adorable photo
and this caption:
“Why are you trying so hard to fit in
when you were born to stand out?”

and this good question from sandi faviell amorim of deva coaching:
“Question, play, challenge, inspire, nudge, shine => that’s me.
How do you express your greatness?”

let’s just call this
all the encouragement
i need . . .

i am tired of
being told
to be a cookie cutter
woman
by governments
and schools
and cultures
and religions.

i don’t flock
and i don’t herd.
not any more.

(don’t say i didn’t warn you.)

Today’s altar is this little altar cloth,
dedicated to the precious,
refreshing,
one-of-a-kind,
unstoppable
irrepressible
one-of-a-kind
individuals
we all are.

PetrifiedPinecone

a petrified pinecone.

yes, really.

to see this pinecone
is to see an altar.
a special space
that’s nestled inside layers
of fierce protection
from the outside world.
a space filled
with layers
and lightning
and shifts
and color
and sparkle
and spaciousness
and i think yes,
that’s what an altar is.
a place –
even a place
in the center
of the usual daily hubub –
where we can go
to mark a space for ourselves,
where we can define
(perhaps to ourselves)
what’s most important
right here, right now,
where we can lay claim to
our most sumptuous selves.

Tinies

he picked them up in the woods on the mountain,
this rock museum volunteer.
teensy tiny sapphires,
no bigger than the seed pearls
in the photo above.

this morning
we met a man who
uses tweezers to mix
pollen particles
to create new dahlias.

who am i?

i am the woman
who is
slowing down
and making time
and paying close attention
to see
to create
to live in
beauty.

today’s post is part of the scintilla project.

thinking in cloth

it has been a tough week with many words exchanged. i’m feel i’m over my allotment, that it’s time to slow things down, drop out, take a breather, rest.

so i pick up needle and thread because, really, sometimes i just think better with cloth than with words. doesn’t mean i don’t initially imagine the cloth as voodoo doll and needle as stabbing device, mind you, but ultimately bringing together odd-shaped, different pieces of fabric helps me bring together stray thoughts and sometimes make sense of strange occurrences – one of the many things i know to be true, though i can’t explain the how or why. and so another project begins . . .
